To hear Republican-Teahadists, we poor and middle class are a bunch of parasites.
And the “JOB CREATORS” are so burdened with taxes and regulations that it is impossible right now for them to create jobs.
When you hear a Governor like ours (Florida-R) talk about those recipients of welfare you would think…and that is precisely what he wants everyone to think…that all people getting welfare are drug addicts. This of course was a gross lie on his part when he pushed this new law that requires people on welfare to take drug tests (mind you, those tests will drum up business for his/his wife’s clinics) and it is so lacking in facts that when the actual figures came out it was an embarrassement: 8.6% of the U.S. population partakes of illegal drugs while only 2% of WELFARE RECIPIENTS were found to take drugs…is there a disconnect? I say…no disconnect at all, it is all designed to malign and vilify welfare recipients so that Rick Scott can go ahead and do away with Florida paying welfare.
Put another way: When Republicans talk about Social Security they refer to it as a “Ponzi” scheme and a give-away, they treat it as some form of socialist welfare…when in reality, each and everyone of us pays into that fund…it is solvent and it will be for many years to come…AND IT DOESN’T NEED FIXING! Even though the Republicans will have you believe that it is about to go bankrupt next week. Again, here the narrative doesn’t meet with the facts and the intended result is that people will allow Republicans to dismantle, destroy, privatize or whatever the fuck it is they want to do with SOCIAL SECURITY.
Then again, how often have you heard Republicans talk about the poor and the middle class “sacrificing equally” and working harder, being more productive, more patriotic…What a bunch of crap! The poor and the middle class are the close to the most productive of all the industrialized nations; they pay far larger a share of taxes than in other countries and receive a hell of a lot less in terms of services, health protection, wages, benefits and job security…and that is a fact. But this is a narrative that fits very well with the PLUTOCRACY agenda…the super-wealthy want the poor and working class to work harder and to pay them less…it is the nature of the beast but one that is very contrary to what America stands for.
Excerpt:
"Representative Michele Bachmann noted recently that 47 percent of Americans do not pay federal income tax; all of them, she said, should pay something because they benefit from parks, roads and national security. (Interesting that she acknowledged government has a purpose.) Gov. Rick Perry, in the announcement of his candidacy, said he was dismayed at the “injustice” that nearly half of Americans do not pay income tax. Jon Huntsman Jr., up to now the most reasonable in the Republican presidential field, said not enough Americans pay tax.
Representative Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, and several senators have made similar arguments, variations of the idea expressed earlier by Senator Dan Coats of Indiana that “everyone needs to have some skin in the game.”
This is factually wrong, economically wrong and morally wrong. First, the facts: a vast majority of Americans have skin in the tax game. Even if they earn too little to qualify for the income tax, they pay payroll taxes (which Republicans want to raise), gasoline excise taxes and state and local taxes. Only 14 percent of households pay neither income nor payroll taxes, according to the Tax Policy Center at the Brookings Institution. The poorest fifth paid an average of 16.3 percent of income in taxes in 2010."*
Remember also, that those who (based upon wealth) are in the entire bottom half of the population (155 million people) only have as much wealth as the nations wealthiest 400 individuals. This is an astonishing fact. In fact, "the poorest 60 percent of U.S. households -- possess [only a tiny]... 2.3 percent of the nation’s total net worth." politicfact again. So this category of the population, the working poor, is probably not a group from which we can extract very much more in taxation from (even though we already do overall, via payroll taxes, because the number of people is very large).
THE ONLY THING WE HAVE LEARNED FROM HISTORY IS THAT WE HAVEN’T LEARNED FROM HISTORY.
We have it in front of us, the history of civilization and how each and every time there has been a ruling class oppressing the majority, it can last a generation or a couple of centuries but it will inevitable result in the masses of the repressed revolting. “Let them eat cake” Marie Antoinette is one example and we can go on as back as the Romans and their excesses.
Here in America, if we keep insisting in pampering and favoring the very wealthy and the corporations at the expense of 98% of the American people it will also experience the same fate.
