The Presidential elections may well prove to be the most important in our history
Oh, I’m sure you heard this before…all the politicians keep repeating it with a sense of urgency and a tenor of doomsday; but this time it is we, the people who are saying it. The American nation and our society has come to a crossroads of significant magnitude.
It is precisely because we have become a dysfunctional society, have an ineffective government, a nation motivated by greed and profits alone and a total disregard for the wellbeing of our fellow Americans that these elections have that much significance.
These elections will define what kind of nation we are and what kind of people we want to be. It is not just what we have been and all the controversy that has brought. At stake are the very principles this country was founded, the very philosophy and spirit that motivated those Founding Fathers to midwife the birth of the greatest country on earth.
This poses these questions…the very basic questions: Do we want to continue our path as prescribed by our Founding Fathers? Do we as a nation follow the concepts of compassion, charity, hospitality and kindness? Do we as a country reject all things that are crass, base, anti-intellectual, and anti-science or are we going to continue to value meritocracy? Are we basically a peace loving people or a warrior nation?
From the looks of it, just watching Teahadist-Republicans and their candidates it seems that the rift, that division has become more obvious. We see the total disregard they have for the majority of Americans in favor of the very wealthy and the corporations. We also see how they are motivated by a very selfish “you are on your own” kind of ideology…gone are the days when any and all of our citizens if confronted with disaster or ruin would not get a hand from his/her fellow neighbor. Be aware that also gone are the days when charity was laudable and a principal value in our society…and thus government operated trying to reflect this idea, this charitable and compassionate stance that the rest of us shared and valued.
With the advent of the Teabaggers the Republicans who themselves were a bit selfish and held an askew philosophy…we have seen how anti-democratic and anti-Christian the new Republicans have become…it is every man for himself and there should be no government or regulations to protect us from greed and unfairness…all regulations be gone, all government efforts to correct wrongs vanished, all government efforts to stimulate the economy and even help private enterprise be put aside.
I think the choices are clearer now than at any other time in our history. Be negative, be a defeatist, be a greedy, screw you entrepreneur, or be compassionate, positive and allow for fair competition. Are we a nation of peace or one of war?
