THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE – NOT SO MUCH

It is soon becoming the land of the enslaved 99% by cowards in the 1% who send in their goons to silence us. (overly armed, law enforcement people who are really part of the 1% only they don't know it and they use excessive force and brutality to silence that majority of Americans)

I ask myself: how did we get this way? What has happened to the America I embraced 50 years ago as a youngster full of hope and with the promise of a future that was bright, prosperous and free? Did I miss something along the way?

How can a country as formidable as ours fall so low, become so divided, so selfish and bigoted? Never in a million years did I think then that when I embraced fully and unconditionally the principles that America stood for…those very concepts that were initiated by our Founding Fathers that I would find myself living under a tyrannical, repressive oligarchy.

The sad thing is that I have grown to love this country, to hold very dear all those same principles that some segments of our society are now rejecting or destroying. Is it too late to retreat? Yes it is; for I have nothing left to loose, no life with promises of happiness and prosperity; I am an old man living in a dysfunctional society, one where a great number of its citizens reject everything I am and I stand for. I find it incredible that some of these people have gained enough power to incorporate hatred, xenophobia and homophobia in the way of laws into our government...from local, state all the way to the Federal level.

I find myself diametrically opposed to those who want to destroy our rights…those of free speech and assembly; those who have long ago left the principles of democracy and embraced a credo of greed and selfishness. I curse them and I resent them, I will fight them with the last ounce of energy left in this old body.

But it isn’t just my rights…it is the rights of students, women, organized labor, blacks, Latinos, gays and it is now abundantly clear that this new crop of Republican-Teahadists would just as soon see America perish as to give up their repugnant quest to benefit the rich and the corporations…it is downright un-American and undemocratic to have all the power and the wealth concentrated in the hands of 1% of the population.

There is one segment of our population that believes that corporations are people and that our credo is greed. These same people have no respect for our democratic process nor do they have one ounce of empathy for the millions of us who are left without a voice. We don’t have the money to buy our politicians, we don’t have the power to influence our government…all we have left is our freedom of speech which is being treated as a nuisance, an inconvenience and an irritant that prevents these Republicans to fully implement a theocratic plutocracy in America.
