It took place right at my doorstep and I couldn’t miss it and I intend to go to the one in Miami on Saturday
At the Broward County Main Library there was a rather small but united group of protesters who came to stand up against corporate greed, education cuts, unemployment and bank bailouts. "We are looking for solutions. We are trying to come together to feel we are part of a group, feel like we're part of a population," said Joshua Alba of Occupy Miami.
While another commenter said it best in one of the comments: “Muhammed Malik- Martin Luther King said: "Cowardice asks the question, "Is it safe?" Expediency asks the question "Is it politic?" And Vanity comes along and asks the question "Is it popular?" But Conscience asks the question "Is it right?" And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor political, nor popular, but he must do it because Conscience tells him it's right."
And I couldn’t agree with this last one more. I know I have a lot of trouble even leaving the house to go to the bank or to the store because I care for my 96 year old mother; but I arranged for someone to stay with her for a short while in order for me to go. On Saturday I intend to ride the train instead of dealing with the parking in Miami.
The basic feeling in the country is that the greed of the top 1% and Wall Street is more to blame for the economic suffering of millions than any other single thing. Some folks are so fed up, that they decided to take it to Wall Street! Unless you have been under a rock for the past couple weeks, you will know that a bunch of people converged on Wall Street and decided to stay there until something changed. We covered it on our show a few weeks ago. But what started out modestly has spread, even to other cities. In fact a #Occupy Miami meeting just took place this weekend. Is this the American Fall version of the Arab Spring? Do people have a plan or just a complaint? Who are the 99% they keep talking about?
The basic disconnect couldn’t be more explicit when one looks at the GOP candidates, what they are saying and what they are doing. It all seems to be surreal, their social re-engineering agenda, their insane, far right pronouncements that only a few years ago would have been considered too radical and too crazy. We have one candidate who is proposing the craziest, most disturbing tax restructuring that would destroy our nation…and this is not what I say but what every reasonable, accredited economist in the country: 9-9-9 = 0. Or put another way: Mr. Cain has one nine too many and two screws too few – it is 99%!
So, if you are near South Florida and you read this, we need you to show up at Bayfront Park on Saturday…it is as if your life depends on it because it does!
