Religion wants to scare you shitless so that you have “FAITH”
What is faith? Can you buy it? Can you measure it? Can you substantiate its existence? Can you prove it or disprove it? Is it a feeling? Is it a self-imposed set of ideas? What the fuck is FAITH?
Some years back I was having a discussion about faith with this woman; when I told her that I didn’t believe in “her God” she came unglued and said that I must believe in the DEVIL then. Such absurdity I could not comprehend…because if I can’t accept her personification or conceptualizing something as abstract as the Creator…and that is according to the imagery and characteristics her religion has endowed this Creator…then you must be on the other side…why yes, you are a Devil worshiper, you are vilified and ridiculed, punished and excommunicated for the crime of heresy…you have committed a SIN…measurable even as serious or even worse than murder itself.
The HELL concept is an acquired distaste. It is obvious that this woman was taught the concept of hell; in her mind this is a very unpleasant, rather painful environment; chances are that she has had reinforcement of her fear of pain…and what is more painful than fire? One of the most painful injuries you can inflict upon a human body is that of a burn. So it is logical that religions have chosen this concept to scare the be-Jesus out of non-believers.
This assumption is similar to what George W. Bush did whenever somebody disagreed with his stupid and unnecessary Iraq war: “If you are against the war then you are on the terrorists side” so that if I don’t believe in your idea of God, then I must be a Devil worshiper. And it goes even further than that…since religion has taken it upon itself to control every aspect of people’s lives from diet to clothing, from political affiliation to even demand that they mutilate their infants…and in some of the more radical ones sacrifice yourself in order to gain “martyrdom or entrance into heaven”. They even tell you who you can and can’t love and even how and when to have sex…if you deviate from that they will try to humiliate you and make you feel guilty. I don’t buy that concept and neither should anybody else.
All human beings dislike pain and are not ready to accept the finality of their biological life-spans…it is something they don’t even want to entertain, yet it is a reality that we all have to contend with because we have a death sentence the very moment we are born.
This concept of immortality is all due to the fact that we, as human beings have an ego and it is very difficult to set aside one’s ego and accept the fact that we are mere mortals.
