How many winners of this coveted prize in literature are Mormons?
When I lived in Hialeah, I had a next door neighbor who was a Jehovah’s Witness. I hired her to help my mom who is up there in years to do some of the household chores. But instead of cleaning and helping her she spent most of that time trying to convert her into her stupid religion. I would ask her to come in on a certain day and she would decline because she had a “compromiso con el Señor” (she had a deed to do for the Lord).
As I watched her life, how meaningless it was, how she would spend all of her spare time pursuing some quest to convert others and thus gain validation with her piers I could not help but equate it to my own experiences with LDS in my youth.
The Mormons require you to spend all of your spare time in church activities. To those of us who are creative, free thinkers and independent it is a very unacceptable life. I soon ran away from that nonsense once the Bishop of the Second Hollywood Ward made sexual advances at me only a week after he gave a homophobic guest sermon to the Hollywood 1st Ward where I was a member.
I realize now why there is not one single scientist, artist, writer or poet that belongs to any of these radical religions: it is because those religions demand all of their time. But it isn’t just about the time they demand of followers; it is also that their ideology is diametrically opposed to science because of the Creationism-Intelligent Design vs. Evolution debacle.
Religion has oftentimes not just ignored science and scientific proof…they have gone out of their way to oppose it and persecute those like Galileo. Today, in America it is more like you are admonished for not joining in prayer at a football game or for not belonging to a church and going on a regular basis. But if they had their way, these Evangelicals would even make laws that would require church attendance as we have seen this asinine judge in Alabama do by making non-violent crime offenders opt their punishment: go to church for a year or go to jail.
I also asked myself if the world would not be a better place if these people applied themselves to helping others like volunteer at an orphanage or a hospice rather than going door to door pushing their idiotic superstitious beliefs on others.
