This kind of reminds me of the Cuban society of today where big government is watching every move, every word you say, everything you eat, you purchase, you fuck. In Cuba there are the “Comités de Defensa de la Revolución” – there is one or more in every neighborhood, in every city, province and even in their diplomatic offices abroad. 

The “Church Lady” that Dana Carvey made famous when he played this uptight, prudish but funny character in Saturday Night Live in full drag…is making a comeback…only it has metamorphosed into a moronic politician named Rick Santorum. Don’t get me wrong…the other candidates the Republican Party had been enamored with for short periods of time had been just as moronic and as radical as this one; including the leading contender who belongs to one of the craziest fabricated religions out there…the Mormons.

The Republicans have as a centerpiece of their argument the word “FREEDOM”; but it is a code word, a paradigm of sorts. When you ask Republicans what freedoms they don’t have now they would like to have; invariably they will say: “freedom from government interfering into our lives, freedom from regulations, freedom of speech and freedom of religion”. Then you ask them if they don’t have those now and they will go into a tirade on how the government is pushing socialism down our throats, fighting a war against religion and making it more difficult for anybody to operate a business.

This begs the question: Do you really want to eliminate everything the government does for us? How about roads and bridges? How about work safety and product integrity? How do you feel about airline safety? Or let’s go even further and ask them if they think that government can be entrusted with the safety of our nation…does that include fire and police protection? Do they make an exception with the military?

Conversely, almost in the same sentence they will tell you that the government should define marriage as that of a man and a woman, homosexuality should be criminalized, abortion and even birth control outlawed. Is this included in the government over-reach? Is this not also part of relinquishing your freedoms to the government? I mean, being gay is something the government can’t prevent you from being because you are born with it, and the reproductive organs of a woman are hers and not the property of the government. Yet, they don’t see it that way…because they firmly believe that it is the role of government to be complicit and to help them carry out their religious agenda. 

“They want the state to follow you into the bedroom, the bathroom and beyond. They think you’re too stupid to know what to do with your own body, too ignorant to understand what your doctors tell you and too lazy to be trusted in a job without being subject to random drug testing. Your body is the government’s business.

Let’s take a tour of the church lady state to date. Our nation may soon turn its lonely eyes to Idaho, where Gov. Butch Otter could have the final say on a bill that would order women to undergo a medically unnecessary and invasive procedure before deciding to end a pregnancy.
This is the latest version of the mandatory ultrasound law, recently enacted by Virginia and Texas. But the Idaho bill, which passed the State Senate on Monday in a one-party Republican state, goes much further, and would subject many women to invasive, trans-vaginal inspections.

Idaho politicians love to go on and on about how government shouldn’t force people to do things that violate their conscience or common sense. And for the last three years, we’ve heard Republican presidential candidates condemn the abomination of government coming between you and your doctor.” –TIMOTHY EGAN

 

The interference from government is not confined to gay and women’s reproductive issues. Many Governors are already instituting drug testing laws for recipients of welfare or for employment purposes.  In my own state of Florida Governor Rick Scott already signed into law a bill requiring anyone in need of state assistance to take a drug test. It is being contested but it has as its roots the vilification of welfare recipients by portraying them as drug users.
That very word “FREEDOM” was behind Rich Santorum when he so graciously conceded defeat in Illinois all the while applauding some asshole preacher when he said that if Americans don’t want to live in a Christian nation they should pack up and get the fuck out. That is an erroneous assumption on both their criteria that America is a Christian nation and it is also a very arrogant stand to say that government can make women endure humiliation and vaginal penetration with some forsaken medical instrument if they want to have an abortion, and here is the ultimate insult: even birth control is under attack by Republicans.
The Church Lady is a fictional character and a source of ridicule for the prudish ultra right religious fanatics but that is the type of person who would be very much in their comfort zone under the next Republican administration…if they succeed.

Yesterday as it has happened time after time, the subsidies to oil companies was filibustered by Republicans who by all accounts received mega contributions from the oil companies. 

This in itself is not out of the ordinary since we all know that Republicans are in the pockets of the oil companies. What is unthinkable is that subsidies should be given to the most profitable business in the history of mankind. It is totally repugnant to have the American people pay such high prices at the pump while also providing the funds for these oil subsidies.

What does this mean to regular Americans like you and me? Simply that instead of steak on our tables we have cheap hamburgers because the difference we have to shed out to keep the oil companies getting their dear subsidies. But most of all, it means that the corruption of politicians, particularly Republicans has reached a point of saturation that is endangering the very existence of DEMOCRACY. But there are alternative sources of energy and as soon as Americans realize they are being taken for a ride, the oil companies are going to have to retreat, no matter how much money they regale politicians, how much money they spend on advertising their supposedly positive contributions to America...it is all smoke and mirrors...they know it and a lot of us know it. That is why I am imploring you to observe the "DON'T PURCHASE ANY GASOLINE ON APRIL 15th" because that will send a very solid message to the oil companies to let them know that it is not their money or influence that calls the shots in a DEMOCRACY...it is the people!

 I will never forget when I took my family to Brazil my youngest daughter was 8 and the oldest 10. We went to Iguaçu falls and out of curiosity we also went to the Itaipu hydroelectric dam. We were admiring it from a distance and I said to my daughters: “girls, look at it and remember this view; this is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world” 

With a puzzled look, my youngest looked up at me and said: “but daddy, it is not in the United States.”

I remember back in the seventies during the first of the fake oil crisis that Brazil took steps to become energy independent. Brazil borrowed heavily to build that hydroelectric dam. Only the Chinese are now building one that is to be larger, 25 years later.

But the Brazilians didn’t just stop there. They had enough vision to convert their automobiles to be able to run on ethanol, a fuel that comes from their sugar cane and the bi-product is used as the fuel itself to produce it, therefore it becomes totally self sufficient.

I ask myself the question: If a third world country like Brazil in the 70’s lacking the funds and the know-how was able to accomplish this, why is it then that a country like the United States insists that the technology is not there, that we are looking at 20 or 30 years into the future before the U.S. becomes energy independent?.

OTHER COUNTRIES ARE LEAVING THE U.S. BEHIND IN DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF ENERGY

Norwegian oil and gas giant StatoilHydro has inaugurated the world's first floating full-scale offshore wind turbine, paving the way for deep-water wind farms possessing the dual appeal of being out of sight as well as more efficient.

The turbine, known as Hywind, towers 213 feet above the waterline, but the steel spar on which it is mounted plunges another 328 feet below the surface, where it is anchored to the sea floor by three stabilizing cables. The spar is filled with water and rocks to provide ballast that keeps the turbine from capsizing in rough seas. Located about six miles off of Karmoey near the country's southwestern coastline, Hywind will serve as a test bed for offshore technologies over the next two years as engineers work on getting the cost of Hywind down and figure out how best to develop even larger deep-water turbines.

Hywind, which was covered in Popular Science's "Future of Energy" issue, is a fairly standard 2.3-megawatt wind turbine, but implementing it in such deep water (Hywind can be installed in depths ranging from 400 feet to nearly 2,300 feet, far deeper than existing shallow-water wind technologies allowed) cost StatoilHydro $66 million. Bringing the price in line with that of fixed turbines that are installed in 200-foot depths is one of the goals of StatoilHydro's ongoing research with Hywind.

If successful, Hywind could revolutionize offshore wind power, especially in countries like Japan, South Korea, the U.S. and Spain, where coastline is plentiful and wind is abundant. The U.S. Department of the Interior estimates the U.S. alone could generate 900 gigawatts off its Pacific coast, but many offshore wind farms face objections from wildlife groups concerned with the effects on avian life along the shores as well as coastline dwellers concerned with their being an eyesore. Hywind could circumvent both problems for the most part, while also proving that it's possible to place turbines in offshore areas where winds are generally stronger and more consistent. StatoilHydro said the turbine should be producing electricity in the next few weeks.

CHEMOTHERAPY MAY NOT BE THE ONLY WAY, NOT EVEN THE BEST WAY

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins:  1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer  cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after  treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.  2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a  person's lifetime.  3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer  cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.  4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.  5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day  and by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.  6. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons. America is divided

Who and what set us on this divisive path? Certainly it wasn’t the Progressive Liberals who turned this country of ours into a Capitalist Oligarchy. It is clear that the accusations of the far right are not just unfounded but ridiculous. When we hear them say that the Liberal Progressives want a class war I just get angry. A class war they say and it is the Extremist Far Right Republicans who have been eroding and hurting an already beleaguered Middle Class.

Redistribution of Wealth is what they are saying, not really taking into consideration that the REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH has already taken place: it has gone from the poor and the middle class to the very wealthy and the corporations. The Republicans assured this outcome by systematically giving tax cuts to the rich and even subsidies and give always. 

In his speech after winning? the Illinois primary Romney promised prosperity…but be real, prosperity for whom? If you have a Romney who proposes not just a continuation of the failed policies of the past…the very ones that got us into this financial mess and even goes further than that to make it even more profitable for the rich and the corporations, slashing more of the social programs so that they not only keep their tax breaks and subsidies but the Republican Budget (Ryan’s) is a carbon copy of the one they had last year and that budget by all accounts would add to the deficit not eliminate it.

In contrast, Democrats are stating it very clearly:"Our budget does a few key things," Ellison said at a news conference. "One, it investments in America's future by creating jobs up front, with the proper investments. ... Also, it preserves our safety net. No cuts to Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security. It persons the tax code. Our tax code needs to reflect the resources available across America to pay for the needs of Americans, and not exempt people or give them a break simply because they have the money to get people to give them tax breaks and loopholes. And finally, it is a fiscally responsible budget; it is a budget that reduces the deficit."
The details of how the budget accomplishes that will be released on Thursday. But the basics are that the budget allocates more than $2 trillion over 10 years to specific job-creating activities, ranging from school and transportation reconstruction to boosting clean energy and manufacturing businesses. It pays for that investment by ending tax cuts for the top 2 percent of Americans; ending loopholes for oil, gas and coal companies; and closing other corporate tax loopholes.
By contrast, said Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Calif., "Republicans on the Budget Committee are going to press forward with a budget that asks ask low- and middle-income taxpayers to shoulder the entire burden of deficit reduction, while giving massive tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and preserving huge giveaways for the big oil companies."
Ryan, when he presented his budget on Tuesday, said that the only two choices America faced was a future of debt and decline and a future under his budget, in which the federal government would stop supporting economically struggling Americans, but would continue to prop up the wealthy. The Progressive Caucus' budget shows that there is another choice: jobs and economic security for all Americans, in which each segment of the society contributes based on the extent of what they have.
"This budget is a contrast," Grijalva said, "and we are very very comfortable presenting that contrast to our colleagues and to the American people."

There is one thing that Republicans are not abandoning and that is that stupid Reagan TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS theory. It didn’t work then and it never will.

The general attitude from Republicans as we have seen is that they should block and do everything in their power to make the present government and President Obama fail so they can take it over once again and set us on the same destructive path as before.

It is no longer a secret nor do they even try to mask it or hide it. The Republicans represent the interests of the wealthy and want to screw the middle class. We had a perfect example this week with one Senator blocking very important legislation that would have extended unemployment benefits. Never mind that he took this stand because he said “it is the principle” but to do so with people’s only way of financial income is downright insensitive and cruel. There was even one of his buddies that said that why give them unemployment extensions, that only encourages them to not go out and look for work.

And the American people would dare protest? The arms of repression have come down on Occupy Wall Street hard and brutally. The protests of last fall were squashed, repressed with excessive force. But let us all be warned: this Occupy Wall Street movement is not going away, it is going to return with a vengeance this spring.

It is always amazing to me that the Republicans begrudge a few million dollars to help those less fortunate in our society yet they have no qualms about spending billions in an unnecessary war they got us into and they even lied to us and the world in order to benefit the oil companies. Our deficit is so high because of these wars, our financial chaos was caused by their incompetence and the millions of people affected by this should never forget who caused their grief.

Yet, Republicans and the ultra right conservative pundits are accusing our President of being a socialist and a welfare President. I ask you this: If President Obama was a socialist, would he not have nationalized the banks when they went belly up? They were bankrupt and nationalization of the banks would have been totally acceptable. Also, when the car companies in unison announced they were about to go into bankruptcy, the U.S. Government could have also taken over and nationalized them. Obama was very clear on this and he said: (paraphrasing) that he had no intentions of taking over nor did he want the car companies to be in government hands.

I don’t know if you are aware, dear reader that the Castro brothers has declared President Obama to be on top of their “blacklist”. Now, if he was a Marxist-Socialist as these wing nut ultra right fanatics claim, do you think that the Castro brothers would have been so unkind?

We Democrats, progressives, liberals and the otherwise sane general public should get off our collective asses and tell the Republicans that we are not going to take their bullshit anymore. We are going to pass whatever legislation is needed to make sure our country survives and the poor and middle class can thrive again.
