Of course, I didn’t expect an answer…I was right, he wasn’t going to touch this one with a ten foot pole.
Dear Senator:
I received your reply to my request for you to stand with the American people and protect free speech. You said in the reply how much you value free speech and that it includes political contributions which had to be vigorously defended.
As a Cuban who came to this great land trying to escape a tyrannical regime where there was no free speech, I can tell you that it is thrice as important to me. Perhaps you could ask your parents who may also have felt the repression and lack of free speech before they came to America from a dictator (Batista) who was corrupt, only catered to the special interests of the wealthy and was ruthless with the repression of the Cuban people. Then came the Castro government and we saw radio stations and newspapers confiscated and the repression that followed which was ten times worse than the previous government.
Whether one has their free speech taken away by a tyrannical totalitarian government or by special interests who can actually buy it, is of little consequence because it means the same. In America Free speech is not free any more…it costs money and those who have the money can buy it and do so anonymously and without limits.
That is precisely what has happened with Citizen’s United…when the rest of us in society can’t express our opinions because we can’t compete with the corporations and the very wealthy, free speech ceases to exist.
I know you are following the Republican Party line on this issue but I seriously and respectfully suggest that you reconsider your stance in favor of the wealthy having this privilege at the expense of the majority of us.
Sincerely,
Raul Rodriguez
