WE HAVE A DREAM

Martin Luther King would be protesting with the 99% today.

Because we all had a dream, and that dream as envisioned by Martin Luther King has turned into a nightmare. It is simply the hijacking of the American dream by a very small number of wealthy individuals.
But Dr. King’s dream is not only threatened with the redistribution of wealth; it is also being assailed by a vicious and unbridled racism brought about by the ascendancy to the Presidency of Barack Obama. There still exist in our country the same individuals who opposed Dr. King and they can’t accept the fact that a black man now occupies the White House.
When Dr. King was fighting for equal rights gay Americans were in the closet and it was too dangerous to even be seen in the streets let alone demand equal rights. Now that most everyone has caught on that gay people are just as deserving and should enjoy the rights everyone else has, the same bigoted bunch that kept the black people oppressed does the same with gay Americans.
But the most blatant reminder that Dr. King’s plight for the realization of the American dream is being performed in the streets and campuses of America. Occupy Wall Street protestors are being pepper sprayed, beaten and taken into custody reminiscent of the repression that the black movement was subjected to in MLK’s days.
Today we celebrate Dr. King’s “I have a dream” but there is still a lot to be done.
I have a dream, you have a dream, we have a dream
