Sometimes I can think of life as a train trip
You are a lone passenger in an empty wagon and the train is going 100 mph. Then it gets to a station and it stops but briefly and a couple of people get on; one of them sits right next to you even though there are plenty of other empty seats while the second passenger has settled at the end of the wagon and not only is he listening to something plugged into his ears but he is staring out hopelessly into the passing landscape.
Obviously, the aloof, music listening passenger wants nothing to do with you while the one who sat next to you does. A conversation is soon under way and it is lively, interesting and most rewarding for both of you. Now your train is approaching your stop and you are tempted…do I give this person my phone number? Is this a human being I would like to see more often?
Sure, why not? Life itself is a train wagon full of aloof passengers listening to music. If you end your train journey and you have more than a handful of friends then you can consider your travels a success. If on the other hand you find yourself with some piped music into your ear-plugs staring out of the train window, it is possible that you have wasted the train ride and failed miserably at being human.
And yet, with all the uncertainty life has to offer it too can be like a train wreck that happens unexpectedly and unwelcomed…you may be hurt or even get killed but you had to make the journey and you had to get on that train no matter what…it is something we all must do.
